Carolyn Stockbridge was born in 1965 in Canterbury, Kent, England. Her family emigrated to Canada, settling in Vancouver in the early 80's. In 1982 Carolyn was awarded an entrance scholarship to the Emily Carr College of Art&Design. Even though a childhood dream, the confines of the art institute was not a good fit. After self development as an independent experimental artist, Carolyn was drawn to the inspiration of the New York art scene and moved to NYC to study at the Art Students League (under Catherine Redmond). While living there, a mentorship began with Henrietta Mantooth which remains an important part of Carolyns continued development to this day. She returned to Emily Carr Institute as a mature student in 1997, where she studied with Landon Mackenzie. Carolyn was the recipient of the Takao Tanabe painting award and was mentioned as a "..boundary buster.." by Vancouver Sun, Arts writer, Michael Scott, upon graduating in 2000.

Carolyn's paintings explore paint as subject matter. Her bold and sensitive style incorporates specific use of colour, composition, space and territory. While always making reference to 'paint' and 'painterly expression' as being the one language to always return to and operate from, Carolyn celebrates the history of painting, being particularly drawn to the era of Abstract Expressionism. Although believing that 'original' art is now, near to none, Stockbridge says; "Authenticty and purpose are the most important elements in creating work. Replicating is something i do not want to do, however, we cannot but be influenced by the past. I welcome various influences in my paintings, as much as i am aware of whom i leave out. It takes a lengthy practice to achieve and recognize and accept authenticty in ones own mark making. I think it happens by constantly painting, researching, observing and figuring out what works, what doesn't work and by not worrying about the outcome. Honouring the history of painting is essential to understanding our own work and through longevity we begin to notice a familiarity with ourselves, if we're lucky, we're able to tap into the consciousness of painting. When moments of understanding arrive, when it all connects and seems right, it feels like the floodgates are opened, there comes purpose, and when that happens, honestly, all one can do is go with it"

Along with continued indepth exploration into painting, Carolyn is also known as the film score composer and animator for award winning films and documentaries by Nina Rota. Collaborations have also included working with Canadians, Etienne Zack and Randy Lee Cutler. The recent exhibition 'Groupings' was the artists third solo exhibition held at Vancouver's Elliott Louis Gallery in February 2012. Paintings by Carolyn are collected in Canada, America and Europe.
